Music Review // Nikita "No One's Gonna"
At the start of "No One's Gonna" there are these sounds like horns which make me feel like we're going into some type of jazz, maybe something from a coffee shop genre, but then it quickly becomes these blissed out electric guitars. Nikita carries this sound that is between pop rock and flat out pop. As much as I can hear someone modern within this sound, such as Lana Del Rey, I can also hear someone like Natalie Imbruglia, which just makes this song feel like it fits within its own time and space.
Nikita has a simple and direct way of saying during the chorus that "No one's gonna love me like you", which can bring meaning to the rest of the song. The lyrics within the song can also dive into why that is and I do enjoy that there are these specific reasons for it and we're not just left guessing. One line says: "Cause you know I'm not mean / I'm just afraid of pain" and that just really describes why so many people behave the way that they do, with the idea of rejecting someone or hurting them before they can hurt you.
Throughout all of this also comes a point near the end of the song where the singing comes through in layers. Lines such as "Call me up just to hear my voice" are blending with the main chorus and it just feels in some way like it's conflicting even though the message is on the same page. At first I thought maybe I was hearing two songs at once, but it very quickly became apparent that this was just part of the layered pop that is Nikita,
Ultimately, "No One's Gonna" is a pop song that feels too complex to be pop. It's also a love song, but it's not just singing about how much someone loves someone else but rather adds in those shortcomings that we have as humans. This is definitely the type of song you should be listening to for the vibe, but also because it feels like something everyone can be a part of while not feeling as one-dimensional as pop music can typically feel.
