You never really know how a baseball game is going to play out until you reach the ending. This game started with a Javon Malone walk, who then stole second base and was singled in by AJ Hendrickson to give the Expos an early 1-0 lead. During the second inning, the Expos pulled off the double steal with Max Giacco being safe at second while Dante LaRosa went from third to home. Typically, with runners on first and third, you just let them have second to prevent such things, but this put the Expos up 2-0. It would be the only two runs that they scored for the entire game.
In the bottom of the second, Jordan Jeroszko got things going by scoring on a wild pitch. The bases then became loaded with no outs. After a strikeout by Brendan O'Connell to Yadiel Alvarado, Willy Yahn was hit by pitch and that made it a tie ball game. Brendan Lynch would single in Justin Miller and before the inning was over the Bankers were up 4-2.
After this, it just felt like everyone got a turn scoring. In the bottom of the third inning, Jordan Jeroszko scored, followed by Justin Millter scoring Nason Busca to give M&T a 6-2 lead. Hector Gonzalez would come in to pitch for the Expos and after giving up a single he'd strike out a batter then a doubleplay would end the inning.
The quick run of the rest of the game is that Jordan Jeroszko singled in Brendan Lynch in the fourth to make it 7-2, then in the bottom of the sixth inning a HBP, BB and BB allowed Nason Busca to drive in two more runs. Justin Miller brought in Jordan Jeroszka, who was really having such a great game, and put up the final 10-2 score.
One of the things I noticed from standing behind home plate is that the M&T pitcher Ben Darrow threw slower than most pitchers seem to, but it really seemed to throw the hitter off. This is something we need more of in baseball so players aren't blowing out their arms after one Cy Young winning season. There was this one pitch that Ben Darrow threw- and I saw it twice in a row- where it comes in so slow and looks like it's going inside but at the last second curves over the plate for a strike.
I didn't believe I was seeing what I was seeing and I doubt the batters believed it either. This 100% looked like a pitch you shouldn't swing at right up until it was a strike. And it all felt like it was happening in slow motion, but I also felt like it was a movie and the ball was moving on a string because of the way it went. This is just something that feels like it defies science and physics, so my hat is off to Ben Darrow.
As M&T improve to 1-1 they will play the Greeners at home on Friday night. The Greeners have started the season 0-3, for the record. The Expos look to welcome the East Hartford Jets to Ceppa Field tonight (it's going to be a scorcher) and then the Expos go to McKenna Field on Friday to face the Jets again in a sort of split doubleheader.
The East Hartford Jets are currently 1-1 and while the Expos are now at 1-2 these next two games could be a good way to make up some ground and get above .500. On a side note, watch out for the Middletown Mets who are currently sitting atop the leader board in first place, right above those Vernon Orioles. The Orioles and Mets play tomorrow night at Palmer Field for the battle of first place and then ext week, on Monday, the Expos are right back in Middletown to meet the Mets again.
