Music Review // Rickie Wang "Troublemaker"
Rickie Wang has created a truly infectious song with "Troublemaker", With the elements of pop that get stuck in your head, you'll be singing along with this one in no time. "Trouble trouble trouble / double trouble with me" will not only become an anthem but it will make you wonder who that other person is that you will be getting into trouble with. This song is about a duo, as there is the line: "We're peas in a pod, against all odds". In some ways, this song might feel like it's even about finding that special someone you can create trouble with some day.
When watching the official music video, you'll see an animation with a child and dog. I think that's fairly fitting as well, because when you think of a parent with multiple children, then the children together can become trouble. But if you have one child and get them a pet such as a dog, then that child and the dog can become trouble together. So in some ways this song feels like it's about needing someone to tell you when something's a bad idea, but maybe also not wanting that.
There is a line in here that says "All the rules were made for you and I to break, yeah" and within that comes a sense of rebellion. It's not as defiant as just a statement of fact. It's a message that things might have been done a certain way for a long time, but now things are going to start being done a new way whether you like it or not. I am a firm believer in breaking things to put them back together in a better way and I think this song supports that.
Whether you want to read deeply into the lyrics such as "Tea in the morning, coffee for the night" or you just want to take this song at face value as being an innocent tale of kids getting in trouble- because that's what they do and it's how they learn- Rickie Wang has just created this fun pop song that stands out from other songs, not only with its sound but with its message. So put this one on and go out and cause some trouble.
