Music Review // evvvie "Better Than Mine"

As "Better Than Mine" begins with this slow, acoustic strum it picks up as it kicks in.  There is pop quality to the tock, but there is also this buzz in the way which it comes out as well.  Musically it reminds me of someone from the 1990's alt rock era, like Alanis Morisette, PJ Harvey or even The Murmurs.  But perhaps the most important aspect of this sound is that it just feels upbeat, like a ray of sunshine.

Throughout these lyrics you won't find the title in the chorus but it is in the lines: "You get what you pay for and what you pay for is better than mine".  This, in and of itself, is such an interesting notion because it can mean different things.  On one hand, you can take it as someone who has more money than you, thus they're buying nicer things than you.  The line comes in the song around the same time as one about coffee, so imagine the people out there buying Starbucks every day while you're making your coffee at home.

At the same time, the "mine" in that line can refer to the idea that what you have to offer might not be as good as what someone else can simply buy because they have more money than you.  It's that awkward scenario where you try to buy someone a present but you can't afford what they can and so maybe you get them a phone case when they could buy the whole phone.  It's just that idea of someone being able to buy more than what you can offer, but as people, sometimes what we have to offer is worth more than money.

"Better Than Mine" will leave you with a bit to think about in terms of the world and perhaps most importantly it will give you the lines in the chorus: "Oh baby don't be so cynical / Those feelings bring you down, reciprocal".  While this song does generate those positive lights, evvvie also just wants to remind people of one of my favorite life lessons and that is that you get what you put into the world.  If you see the world as bleak and dark, then that's probably what you're projecting.  If you listen to this song and get into that sunshine state of mind, your whole outlook on the world might just change for the better.
