Music Review // Nathalie King "Within a Dream"
The sound of Nathalie King has this chill electronic based tone. The pace is steady, but it's also on the slower side as it can feel like it is more brooding, plodding even. There are a number of artists who might have heavier songs and then put this as one of their "ballads" or they just might have this song kick in at some point with heavily distorted guitars. Either way, the sound of "Within a Dream" can make you sleep but it can also assure that you will have nightmares.
There was a great time for electronic music that was bordering on rock during the late 1990's and early 2000's because you could've heard a song like this on a soundtrack to a film such as "The Crow" or even "Jennifer's Body". While it somewhat moves like Sneaker Pimps' "6 Underground" I also hear a bit of the song "#1 Crush" by Garbage. Overall this just lines up really well with the less heavy side of artists such as Linkin Park and Evanescence.
Lyrically this song also just sets the mood. There are lines like: "I have dreams of ghosts and voices" and it just makes the whole thing feel ethereal and haunted. The general tone of this song is one that's relaxed. It's peaceful and can put your mind at ease to the point where you might listen to it and fall asleep. It's almost unexpecting in that way because of the content of the lyrics. It's something which feels designed to give you nightmares.
If you had a playlist of electronic music that borders on rock you could easily put "Within a Dream" in it to slow things down for a bit, give people a chance to catch their breath. In some ways, I feel like this might be one of the best songs to play for friends because they might argue that it's not heavy enough and just overlook the entire contents of the lyrics, which somehow makes it more threatening than the heaviest of songs.
