Music Review // Patrick Smith "Another Set"
Even though "Another Set" is an instrumental song by Patrick Smith, there is still a lot going on within here. This jazz based sound is saxophone driven, though at other times the sax can get lost in the overall sound. The pace from start to finish steady and it ends so smoothly I think of this as being something rather classical or like Trance Macabre. This is just one of those songs that, at heart, feels like it is for the pure jazz enthusiasts.
When I listen to instrumental songs, I like to think about what types of sounds they might be similar to if they had vocals within them. Hearing "Another Set" very much makes me think about this song being along the same lines as a ska band, to sort of shift away from that jazz tag, and at the same time, if I had to pick a specific band I really hear a lot of Streetlight Manifesto in here, who have often been debated as to whether or not they are truly ska. So, Patrick Smith does find that sort of ska subgenre with this jazz as well.
To add even more fuel to the fire of what this song reminds me of, there are these moments where the sound can just feel like a clarinet or something similar, and so it has that sound of a snake charmer and makes me think it's something out of "Aladdin". Either that one specific scene in "Indiana Jones" where he shoots the guy with the sword or a version of "Aladdin" is what I think of when I hear this sound in terms of relating it with visuals.
Regardless of what type of genre you want to put this in- and I'd understand if you wanted it to be jazz and leave it at that- this song has a certain energy to it. The way that it moves will move you. Without the distraction of words, you can just twist and bend freely, having that momentum to do what you need to get done just by listening to this song. I don't see how it could possibly offend anyone, so definitely add it to your playlist.
