Music Review // El Balcón "No Creo En Banderas"
From start to finish, "No Creo En Banderas" is a burst energy that never lets up and is just so refreshing to hear amidst the music of modern times. Far too often, you might hear something like this and it might feel like it isn't enough and it needs to blend another genre, but the way that this song just comes straight forward with an acoustic punk sound is more than enough. In some ways this musically reminds me of Gogol Bordello, but it just feels like if you took a classic salsa type of song and amped it up.
The lyrics to this song are in Spanish so I don't understand them but that's not important for music because you just feel the energy. A Google translate look up though, does show that this title roughly translates to "I don't believe in flags". I support this idea because I've never really believed in them either, but also it can extend to this larger world view of ideals where you just don't see borders and feel like no land is really owned land. While this music does carry a punk rock vibe, just knowing the title of ths song also puts that into perspective.
While this is a song which, again, I do not understand the lyrics and do not want to lose anything in translation with them, I do enjoy the visuals of this music video and feel like they represent the song well enough. For the most part, this video is seen with two people almost chasing each other around in a game of cat and mouse but they are doing so under the guise of dance. I just love that not only does this song bring that positive energy but it does so in a way which you simply cannot help but move to it.
There are strings within here other than the acoustic guitar, as you can hear what I believe to be violins, but this just has a certain way about it. I don't want to directly compare them just because they're both Spanish speaking artists, but a band such as Ratas En Zelo have more of a straight forward punk feel to me, where as El Balcón can feel like they're taking a more classic sound of Spanish music and speeding up the tempo. You definitely need to listen to this song and when the time comes, you need to listen to all of the other songs El Balcón puts out into the world as well.
