Music Review // Semiah "Withdrawals"
Semiah instantly has an electro-pop hit with "Withdrawals". The sound reminds me of Gwen Stefani or Icona Pop, as it has that steady, chill flow in the verses but will kick in and come at you with rapid fire speed in the chorus. This isn't really like any other sound out there right now, and I really like that it feels both so unique that maybe most people wouldn't understand it, yet at the same time somehow it's on a level where anyone can listen to it and find something to like about it.
This song seems to have fairly straight forward lyrics and ideas. The withdrawals you are going through might be for the love of someone else, but as the song says: "Nobody could pay me enough to try again". In that way, this is definitely a song about being over someone, moving on and just knowing not to make that same mistake again. That does make it feel empowering because you know your self worth and thus know you are better than this.
Along with this song is one of the single best music videos I have ever seen and it needs to be viewed by everyone. Three women go into the snowy mountains to fight a bad guy in what is somewhere between Power Rangers and a live action Powerpuff Girls, though at times the characters do turn into anime as well. I respect how this was done in the cold snow and everyone seemed under-dressed, but at the same time, this video just is this fun little story of action and has set a new bar in the music video making world.
In a situation where you're driving in a car or at a party, this is a great song to put on a playlist because it can immediately change the vibe for the better. At the same time, if you're just sitting at home and are listening to music, make a YouTube playlist and put this video in it because I'm not sure if there is such a thing as watching it enough times.
