Music Review // Jessica Chaz "Promise of Sunlight" (Lindi Ngonelo Remix)
One of the things which really grabs at me right away is how this song is called "Promise of Sunlight". The idea that bad things happen in our lives can be like the darkness. It can feel like when you're going through those struggles, you're perhaps in the dark and can't see the light. But just as the sun sets, so does it rise. So this "Promise of Sunlight" very much like that idea of just knowing that things are going to get better.
Jessica Chaz has this upbeat and positive feeling coming out throughout the entire song. I know this song is called "Promise of Sunlight", but the sound itself just feels like such a ray of sunshine. With that smooth R&B quality bordering on jazz, I'm reminded of Edie Brickell and Nelly Furtado. There are pianos in here to help amplify that sound as well.
While there are many songs which might portray that message of things getting better, I don't think any of them do it quite this way. There is something reassuring about the lyrics, but also honest within it all as well. It feels almost like it's in a matter of fact way that the sun also rises and as such things will get better. It's not even about taking her hand and things getting instantly better, but the idea that it will happen eventually.
Sometimes in life you might feel so far down that you don't think you'll ever be able to get back up. It can feel like one bad thing after enough with no letting up. But this song is about what is not just a law of statistics but puts a brighter outlook on things, saying that things might not be better tomorrow or next week, but eventually, they will be. You have to hold onto the faith in that.
