Music Review // Odd Marshall "Lucky Dragon"
Something about the idea of dragons has always been fascinating to me. There exists an idea in the Chinese Zodiac where a year is assigned to an animal and this can also correspond with your year of birth. Of these animals, the only one which is not real is the dragon, as you could be the Year of the Rabbit or the Year of the Rat. The way that most cultures largely perceive dragons make them feel as if they are actually real, or were at some point, and to that end, to be a "Lucky Dragon" just feels like it's giving you that extra boost of luck.
Odd Marshall takes this song in a very distinct guitar-driven direction. There are few artists out there creating the same sound as Odd Marshall, which seems to take this older style (such as from the 1980's/1990's) with a modern twist. Artists such as The Eagles come to mind for comparison, while there are also these stand-out guitar notes which can just help the song to, musically, find its own identity.
While I enjoy the concept of dragons, the great part about this song is that it is also about the "Lucky Dragon", which takes it one step further. I've always found luck to be this odd sort of thing because it can never really be proven to be true or not. Does it exist or is it all just coincidence? Perhaps the funniest part about luck as well is that while it can work in your favor, you can also have bad luck. So it feels weird that something which may or may not be real can have such a diverse affect on your life.
Regardless of how you feel about dragons, luck or the two combined, Odd Marshall has still created a song which comes with a full on amount of energy that will get you moving. At times this reminds me of that drive of a song by Tom Petty, but overall it just takes on a life all its own. Whether you are yourself feeling lucky or just want to feel lucky soon, this is a great rock n roll song to put on and just enjoy without hesitation.
