Music Review // Laura Adeline "Acquainted"
This song has a certain swagger to it, between the beats and the bass line, it just feels like it can put you into a groove. The way that this song makes me feel is also reflective of what Laura Adeline is singing about in the lyrics. In some ways, this can remind me of Joss Stone or Alessia Cara, as it just has that care-free vibe of no longer caring, just floating around in the sky like a balloon someone mistakenly let go of while in a wide open space.
During the chorus, this song says: "worse than strangers / never be acquainted" and though there are a lot of songs about break ups, they don't really talk about how when you break up with someone if you still see them out in the wild it's this feeling where you're not strangers, but it's this unsettling feeling in the pit of your stomach. I really wish there was some way to not feel that, but I guess it's just the price of having loved and lost.
Not only is this song about a break up, but it's about moving on. There are two lines which repeat in here that kind of hit me and the first says: "if you see me round / it's over now / I know but / I bet you see my face / and blame me for hating you still" which seems entirely fair but then it's followed up by: "but you don't know / I never did / just wish that you were different / I wonder if you changed". Is it weird to hope that people we broke up with have changed for the better? Not to get back together, but just so they can have some peace of mind as well.
As we move from Spring time now into eventually Summer, it's nice to have that sense of rebirth. Moving on from past relationships, and as the lyrics in this song say: "there are a lot of good fish in the sea". Getting out there, putting your heart on the line and just trying to better yourself and find that right person for you seems to be the vibes going into the Summer this year and it has certainly made for a great soundtrack with songs such as this one!
