Music Review // The Nth Power "Never Alone"

When this album first starts, you can feel this sense of the sound being somewhere between R&B and jazz.  I really feel like there should be a genre name that accurately describes the blend of these two elements, but alas there are also a lot of genres as it is now.  The tone feels pleasant and upbeat.  "Crave You" has those starts and stops I love to hear as well as keys, to bring out a little bit of the soul.

There are a lot of little moving parts within these songs and to some extent "Never Alone", as the titular track, can even remind me of Eagle-Eye Cherry.  When we get further into the album, I hear sounds that remind me of the film "Class Act" (with Kid N Play) as well as an artist such as New Edition.  It doesn't seem like it's as prominent now as it once was, but when I was younger and part of Columbia House, this is the type of sound that I have on a lot of cassettes and would likely be sent to me as the featured selection.

Of course there is a slower, sensual ballad on here as well, which sets the mood for other reasons why you might listen to The Nth Power.   With horns and other elements, they really do push the boundaries of what music sounds like, but they also have a way of reminding me of what music once was and hasn't really kept up with over the years- at least now in a large, mainstream way like it once was.

Being born before the year 2000, you might hear elements within this album that you've heard before but can't quite place, you just know you haven't heard them for a while.  It very much feels like being taken back in time, especially for someone even older than me I would imagine.  If you're younger, you're really in for a treat because hearing The Nth Power will hit you in a special way and though you might have to take a trip back to the past, you will be opened up to an entirely new world of music and life.
