Music Review // Apryll Aileen "Call Me Anytime"
There is a rather distinct sound to this song, but I think after spending enough time listening to Apryll Aileen it just becomes that cool groove that you come to know and really is just one of the reasons why you keep listening. Somewhat like new wave or synth pop, this is just the type of sound that I feel like we had on the radio in the mid to late 1990's but it doesn't seem to be there as much now. Artists seem to have gone into a more pop sound- overly poppy even- where as this just keeps that pop but stays mellow.
"Call Me Anytime" is an interesting song because it is about what the title suggests but in a rather specific story way. The song details the daily activities on someone who is on their way to being a soccer star, but also still has that connection with their parents. It's that idea of having all of these eyes on you, yet still your Dad is the first one you call when you get done with the game, as the lyrics say: "He's in the backseat on speaker phone / But he's never alone".
I feel this song in a big way because I watch a lot of collegiate baseball. In fact, I was just at a game which was not only "Senior's Day" but also "Mother's Day". You can talk all you want about how these players can have bright futures in the sport, but at the end of the game they're not looking to talk about that-- they're looking for their families that are there (or I assume calling them if they're not there in person)
With the lyric: "I wish you didn't have to be so far / But you gotta let 'em go so they can follow their heart" this song shows that it isn't even as much about someone playing soccer as it is just letting your kids blossom but still being there for them. You don't have to send your child off to be the next big star of something, it just feels like whatever they're doing you want to be there to support them. If you can't always be there in person, then they should at least always know that you're just one phone call away.
