Music Review // Justin Maki "Wasting Time"
"Wasting Time" is something I can get behind because far too often we live under the idea that we must always be producing and creating. In a lot of ways, we've been conditioned to feel badly if we're doing something that doesn't seem productive, by the standards of society, but I feel like we need to spend time not doing anything in order to unwind and just relax from all of the chaos we can encounter day to day in our lives.
With a mix of funk and soul, some keys and a hint of R&B Justin Maki has a song that can be somewhere between Jamiroquai and P.M. Dawn. There is also a very distinct sequence of keys which comes up multiple times and goes like "bum bum bum bum bum bum". When you hear it, you'll know it, but it is a rather distinct part of this song musically.
What I like about this song lyrically is that it asks the question: "Who says we're wasting time?" The whole idea of being in a relationship and wasting time is quite interesting. If you think about it in the sense of being in a relationship with someone you also work with, and then you take away that work environment and you have nothing in common, then you're not right for each other. But you need to be able to do nothing together- to waste time together.
Justin Maki goes on to sing: "So if this is wasting time / I wanna waste my life on you" and it flips that negative idea of wasting time into a positive- of spending all your time together, whether it feels like you're wasting it or not. Sometimes, and in many ways, that's the thing that we need most in this world. Not time wasted or well spent, but just time spent together. That's what will keep us together.
