Music Review // Ellie Heath "Sick of Myself"
When listening to "Sick of Myself", the way that Ellie Heath describes the situation she is in makes it almost feel like being sick of yourself is an illness. Being stuck in bed, doomscrolling and just all around not feeling great even though it might be more about your attitude and mental health than it is about having an illness such as the flu. That way the words can feel like "sick" is being used in different ways needs to be studied for those who wish to partake in song writing. We don't have enough word play like that any more.
Ellie Heath keeps it chill and the verses during these songs just flow. Sometimes it's got that retro feel to it, with those synths and all, but overall it just has this pleasant sound you'd listen to so you can hear this story as to why Ellie Heath is sick of herself. Into the chorus it gets a bit into bigger beats, like a dance number, and this also makes me think of when No Doubt was in that era with a song like "Simple Kind of Life".
At some point in our life, I think we all get to this point when we're single. We want to have someone to share our experiences with and just not feel as alone in the world. Though there is a line in here about not wanting to be a crazy cat lady and I think some people do want to be a crazy cat person. But it's the idea that says "Let's make a family / Be my guy" and I just think that there is something about being in a family with your parents and if you have siblings, but it's even more special when you have your own family like that.
One of the biggest parts about this song lyrically is that it should resonate with a lot of people. The idea of being constantly on your phone just seems to be the way things are these days, scrolling through social media. But Ellie Heath also says: "I want to spend my time making somebody else's life a little better". So if you can find someone who wants the same, then they are also going to help to make your life better and, well, that's what it's all about.
