Music Review // Jessica Pearson and the East Wind "Do It"
When "Do It" first begins there is a sound of magical strings, like we should be at a Renfare. This goes on with the big vocals and stays in that western type of feeling. I am reminded of the Old West and the gunslingers from that era, but also more modern music sounds such as The Chicks and Emerson Woolf & The Wishbones. There is a definite twang to this, but still it remains at a steady pace to keep you going.
One of the biggest factors of the song "Do It", lyrically, that I enjoy is just how this can be taken. There are certain implications throughout this song as to what is happening, though I don't feel like it's ever really flat out stated. Though for sure, one thing that can be gathered is the abuse, as right before the chorus there are the lines: "He didn't think she could do it / Under all the bruises / Thought he left her useless". Even without the idea of the bruises (physical abuse) there is just the idea of leaving her useless that conveys the abuse so well.
So as you get into this song and you listen to the lyrics, you begin to realize it is about a woman who is in an abusive relationship with a man. Not only is that the case, but she is sick of it and finally ready to leave. In that sense, you could think of this song simply about being an anthem of fighting back in the sense of leaving. You've taken all that you can and you're not going to take any more. Whether it's hitting back in self defense and then leaving or just up and leaving, it sends a strong message that if you're in a similar situation you can do this as well.
But that's not what this song is really about, right? One of my favorite lines in here simply says: "There was only one way this would ever go". At the end, there are lyrics about the sirens showing up as well and while the fighting back could be simply calling 911 for help, I'm willing to read into this all and say that this woman who could no longer stand being abused, killed her abuser. If this feels too harsh, at least find comfort in knowing that he won't be abusing anyone ever again.
