Music Review // Serge & The Currents "This Too Shall Pass"

 

This is such a fun song because when it starts you hear those rambling guitars which can bring about thoughts of Bob Dylan, but as it kicks in the pace becomes much faster.  It's not quite rock-a-billy and it's not quite ska, but it's something between The Wallflowers and Fastball in a faster pace that you can hear in the percussion.  Overall this song is a ride and once you decide to take it, there won't be any getting off until it's over.

While this song has a way of drawing you in musically, you must also listen to these lyrics for inspiration.   The very idea that "this too shall pass" is one which has been around for longer than me.  If you're experiencing something like a break up, they'll tell you just to take it day by day, because every day it will hurt a little bit less until it doesn't hurt any more.   That's the thing about your situations, feelings and all those parts of life- they don't last forever, they eventually change.

During the chorus of this song, Serge & The Currents sing "It's fine / the pain won't last / That's how I'll get over you", which brings out both the good and the bad of how this too shall pass.  On one hand, yes, the pain will be over eventually, but at the same time you have to get to that point and that isn't always easy.  Sometimes the waiting is what becomes the hardest part of it all, in reality.

Before the end of this song there is this nice breakdown of a classical guitar sound that I really enjoy.  This song is a lot of fun, but it also is a reminder that in time, everything passes.  That relationship you hope to forget today could become your next relationship in a matter of time as well.  It just feels like everything is fleeting, as even in time so many people, so many musicians, so many songs, are forgotten because they are not preserved.  Don't let time pass you by.
