Music Review // Rushab Nandha "STATE" (Falt)

The way that "STATE" begins is like we are slowly going into a dream sequence, such as from The Wizard of Oz.   This stays in a sort of calm, ambient place now and it feels like listening to this could be very relaxing, such as for meditation.  Within this first sound of a wave comes a second, so it can feel like two waves are coming at you at the same time, taking turns.  Then there is also this tone behind all of that which adds to it.   The way these sounds all come together remind me of the scene in "Adaptation" where they try and make sounds together to mimic a dial tone while on the phone.

What I find most interesting about this sound is that at times it can feel like the score to a film, perhaps one where we go on a mythical quest or even something with that element of it being scary, where maybe we go in a cave to face a dragon.  But at the same time there are parts of this- not the whole overall, but bits- where I feel like we're in the main screen of a video game waiting for it to start with a character just standing there moving their sword around every so often.  The way it can feel both unassuming but also like it's driving the plot is quite remarkable.

At about the halfway point this can feel like it's taking off into space now.  Everything I felt before has changed somehow, even if it's not the actual sound that has changed with it.  I feel like we're just slowly drifting through space now, getting further and further away from home with no chance of ever getting back.  There is a desolate way about this, but it also can just feel so relaxing, like you haven't a care in the world.
