CD Review // Ron Heglin - Tom Djll "Duos for Voice and Runglers" (Public Eyesore Records)
As the voice begins on this CD, as you would expect it to based on the title, this sort of clicking and bubble sounding noise comes in behind it. It can almost feel like it is coming through as a drum beat now, steady, but still with other sounds behind it like electronic water. More like sonar laser blasts come through as well. I am reminded of zip ties as well. The voice sounds almost frightened now, and the way this can go up and down the scales, both musically and vocally is something to hear.
During the second song the vocals seem to be holding strong while synths cut through like those space lasers, close to lightsabers. Into the next song, it feels more like glitching, maybe like touching the sides in Operation, as these synths and tones can feel like Droids but also they can just feel like you're physically being shocked. The singing can feel loud and operatic as we launch into space. The fourth track begins with a chipping away at the sound, into some harsh synth glitches.
Synths feel more expansive and less harsh as we get into "ilyaw ya". And then the static bursts start dropping like bombs. The singing can become very much like that throat singing you might hear and then the tones just come out as beeps. The beeping also begins to remind me of a phone before it turns into a more direct computer glitch. During "dwadot" you can really hear how the vocals become long and drawn out while the music just comes through like beeping, a stabbing type sound. This shows how sometimes the two work together and sometimes they can seem as if they are odds with each other.
It's windy now in "wheeeooo" but I am bracing for takeoff. The ringing and synth beeping feels more like sci-fi as we get closer to the end of this CD. It can really feel like a lost transmission from some other planet.
