Music Review // Harley "Gold"

 

When this song first starts I am reminded artists who are on the radio in the rock genre but have this way of weaving in a pop sound as well.   Bands like Cage the Elephant and The Strokes come to mind as this first hits, but as the song goes on it becomes more difficut to compare this with another artist because the chorus can feel like it is getting into this genre of pop punk even.

"Gold" is upbeat and somewhat urgent though, which is nice because Harley seems to know the score.  This song is about needing an answer and as a lot of songs tend to be about, this is a song about love.  One of the first things Harley sings in here which features the title is a line which says: "Tell me that it's still gold".  I think this as being a reference to love being gold and I think of things such as "Stay gold, Pony Boy".

During the chorus of the song the line comes out which says: "Don't tell me you're coming if you're not".   I think this is one of those important lyrics to the song overall because it's that idea of commitment.  I'm not sure why but when I think of how this song illustrate love as being "Gold" I think about the Olympics.  It's that idea that when you find that perfect someone, it's like winning gold.  But it's also the idea that you have to put a lot of work into being an Olympic Gold Medalist, so that's why this song is asking to make sure that you're all in.

The guitars in this really shine as they can feel complex, while at the same time they take us out for a nice bridge.  Overall this song is somewhat catchy, as it can get stuck in your head, and I like to think that while many people are seeking out actual gold in physical ways, I believe the gold that we all need to find comes not only from within ourselves but from other people and how we connect with them.
