Blu-Ray Review // Debbie Does Demons [2023] (Culture Shock Releasing)
When I learned about "Blood Bitch Baby" being released on Blu-Ray and saw it coming to Valoria Video, I picked it up along with this Blu-Ray of "Debbie Does Demons". As it stands right now though, this Blu-Ray has sold out on Valoria Video, but can still be found on other sites such as Terror Vision. So this was a nice little double feature of Blu-Rays I picked up that are both by Donald Farmer and have Jessa Flux in them.
While I always think of movies as being Donald Farmer + Jessa Flux, there are also a lot of other actors who appear in here, not only from "Blood Bitch Baby" but just from other films written and directed by Donald Farmer. Roni Jonah, Claude D. Miles, Angel Nichole Bradford and Morrigan Thompson-Milam all come to mind right away, as well as Jocephus Brody (RIP).
This movie is fun for what the plot is because you have this witch-demon in Carmilla (Jessa Flux) who is literally summoned by a group of friends using a ouija board. This feels like it's always one of those tales as old as time where you mess around with something you perhaps shouldn't be messing around with, and what they expected to happen did in fact happen but they were not happy with the results. It's the same idea as when kids go into the woods looking for Bigfoot, then are mad when they find him and he rips their arms off.
In the midst of all of this though is Debbie (played so wonderfully by Angel Nichole Bradford) who has a television show called "Debbie Does Demons". What's funny is that when the two different storylines collide and the group of friends who are slowly being picked off by Carmilla decide to reach out to Debbie as she is more of a professional, one of them says "Debbie Does Demons" sounds like an adult film.
"Debbie Does Demons" is funny, over the top, magical and just everything that I love about film, especially because it is written and directed by Donald Farmer but also starring Jessa Flux. In the interest of nudity though, Jessa Flux doesn't really have her chest covered until the very end of the film when she's going to be on tv (which makes sense). I always kind of wondered why every time someone saw Carmilla, as a character, their initial thought was "Who are you?" but it was never "Who are you and why are your tits out?" I guess that's just the power of Jessa Flux's tits.
But Jessa Flux isn't just a great pair of tits. Jessa Flux is an incredibly talented actor and a great pair of tits.
This Blu-Ray features bonus content you won't find by simply watching "Debbie Does Demons" on Tubi (Though, by all means, if you want to, definitely watch it there as well). There is a special introduction to the film by Donald Farmer, who is in his car talking about the different films he has worked on with the actors previously and how the whole film came about as well. There are also interviews with Jessa Flux and Angel Bradford on here, which are interesting because Jessa Flux mentions several films that are upcoming but don't seem to be.
One of the films Jessa Flux mentions is "Maniac Cheerleaders" and I can't seem to find anything about that online. But in the intro, Donald Farmer also mentions that Morrigan Thompson was in a film called "The House That Eats Flesh", which I really want to see but seems to be stuck in film purgatory.
Perhaps one of the best parts of this Jessa Flux interview at the end though is that she mentions being in a fan film called "Voorhees Night of the Beast", which can't make any money so you can stream it for free on YouTube. We immediately went and watched that next which was a nice tribute to Jason Voorhees while also having him square off against Bigfoot, who was portrayed by professional wrestler Madman Fulton. Not only do these movies keep on giving, but they come full circle at times because Madman Fulton is also known for being the titular character in Tom Chaney's "Squatch" from this year.
As much as I can seemingly get lost and distracted going down all these rabbitholes, just looking up the different actors in "Debbie Does Demons" and then seeking out their other films, then finding the writers and directors from those films and seeking them out, it should be noted that on its own, "Debbie Does Demons" is a simply fantastic film. Even if you don't open up your Google search tool and look for other films that you could kind of think as spawning from this, it's just a lot of fun and the way in which Carmilla dies at the end just seems to be the perfect.
