Music Review // Eric Reinhart "Chances"
As this song begins it seems to begin softly and then shift into this wave of electronics and synth. There are artists- both on the radio and not- who share this fun and carefree type of pop rock sound, but right away I think of somone like Hellogoodbye. Owl City is also a big one, but it's just that idea of having something which is so pure in its sound, catchy and yet also not really offensive in a way that if this came on in a playlist or on the radio someone would ask for it to be changed. There is just that type of vibe anyone can vibe with.
The interesting thing about these lyrics is that Eric Reinhart uses the titular word- "Chances"- in two different ways. The most prominent way I feel like this word is being used during this song is suggested by the lyric: "We couldn't plan this". You can call it fate, destiny, whatever you want to really- but the idea of something being by chance happens more often than you think. Although, for me personally, I don't believe anything happens without reason, so even though it may feel like it's a coincidence, there is a reason for it.
On the other side of this same word are the lyrics: "Come on let's take our chances". This becomes an exploration into language and how the same word can have different meanings but yet they can also feel related. The concept of this being that you have a chance encounter with someone, but then decide to keep it going, to take your chance and continue to see them. The way the words go together like this can just make it feel even more like everything truly is connected and happens for a reason.
Often times I think about how vast the universe is and has been throughout the history of time. Eric Reinhart has the lyrics: "There's a million roads / A million ways / And here we are / Face to face" in this song and it just makes me think about all of those moments in life which happen, all of those special moments, where you just think about all of possibilities but yet somehow here you are, experiencing this. It just seems so deep but also overwhelming when thought of on a much larger scale, but luckily the tone of "Chances" can stay upbeat and energetic.
