Music Review // The Imaginary Band "If You Only Knew"
As The Imaginary Band begins this song with the harmonies it will go into this guitar line which reminds me of a band like Dire Straits. A hard-driven guitar based verse will go into a chorus that can take on a bit more of a country sound, as it gets that bit of twang, but ultimately even through the guitar solos it can come back to those harmonies by the end. This gives the sound an overall rock feeling more than anything else, it's just not the type of rock you hear as much any more.
The idea behind "If You Only Knew" feels like a distinct notion between knowing what another person is going through and then working on that together. This is evidenced in the chorus, which has the lines: "No I don't know what you're going through / But I'd like to". Sometimes when someone is going through something, maybe we can't relate or we can't offer up any helpful advice. But also sometimes just being able to share our experiences and say that you can't relate directly but can feel for that person can help.
At the same time, there are also lyrics which say: "This don't have to be a sad song / Learn your part and you can start to play along". I like this because it makes it feel like the world is one big song and we're all just playing our parts to add in this sound. Even if you don't think of it as the world, as that broad, it can be more local and even just think of it as being your family and what they might do to create a song together and which part each person plays. Ultimately, this just feels like a message of working together though.
Whether or not you feel like this song applies to you, it probably does. If you can take the message as being a way for us to lift each other up and help each other out, then even if you feel like you're doing enough or just don't know anyone to help out, there is just always something which you could likely be doing to help more. Perhaps right now more than ever we need that sense of community and helping each other. If it's on a personal level or just a local level, use this song as a way to help you help others.
