Music Review // Cédric Dind-Lavoie "Chrysalide"
When this song begins there is this slow buzzing, humming type of sound which you could take as a musical instrument but I like to feel it more as a bug flying around in a good way. It's like we're out in the middle of nature just listening to what is happening around us and letting that guide us as well. There are beats within here, as this flight seems to keep a rhythm and to some extent when you're hearing these first sound it can begin to feel like the movement is sleek and almost like something out of a spy film.
Acoustics flutter into this sound and they remind me of a harp though I'm not sure if they exactly are. Somewhat soft, but steady paced this can feel like jazz in a sense but overall it just has that feeling where you think about it being more of the score to a film. I think about something animated, like if "A Bug's Life" was made by Studio Ghibli. Through the acoustics though you can just feel this connection to nature.
As this begins with that flight then turns to the acoustics like a harp, I think of the third part of it- which ultimately takes us to the end- as being where the acoustics switch over from being harp-like to a more stable type of acoustic guitar sound, as if someone is just playing the notes. This can make the sound feel a bit more grounded, less of a flight of fancy, but at the same time this magical aspect of the song does not disappear.
Hearing an artist set out to create an instrumental song such as this always makes me think about how you have to kind of use the music itself to guide the song because there are no vocals. That is definitely present here. But I also feel like within telling your story, you have this deep genre of music to pick from in your tale. At the very end of this song, computer beeping can be heard which brings electronics into what otherwise feels so natural. I enjoy that this is added into here as it really tops off an already brilliant piece of music.
