Music Review // Alexander Gallant "Everything You Need"

Alexander Gallant has created a beautiful acoustic song in "Everything You Need".  It is not lost on me that the title can relate to the sound of this song because it is only vocals and that guitar.  Sometimes, less is more.  Sometimes you might overthink or overdo it.  But if you have that acoustic guitar and you can sing along, maybe that really is all that you need to make a song.  There is something to be said here for need as opposed to want.

Lyrically this song goes into the chorus with the title and says "Maybe this time you'll be the lucky ones / And you will see / You've got everything you need".   In the current state of the world, it feels like we always have more- or at least want more- than what we need.  The way that we get a new version of an iPhone every year, for example, makes it feel like we not only are wasting resources but just don't fully know what we have and appreciate it.  I have a working phone, so I don't need to "upgrade" to the newest and latest model.

But this song isn't about things in that sense as much as it is about having those qualities you need in another person.  These lyrics are kind of fun in the verses because you get lines like: "I was born to do no harm / I was born down on the Christmas tree farm" as well as "She was born to take no lip / She was born in the alien spaceship".  When that can get said about two people, how can they not be made perfect for each other.

As Alexander Gallant lends his voice to this song, it can sound uniquely like him though the soft acoustics and way the lyrics are delivered make me think of artists such as Jack Johnson.  Perhaps more than anything else though this song should serve as a reminder that sometimes we have everything we need even if it feels like we want more.  We should look around and not take what we have for granted.  Life isn't measured by cell phones and such items, but rather the company we keep and how they impact our lives.
