Music Review // Sonny Gullage "Go Be Free"

No one is really, truly free all of the time and this song by Sonny Gullage reminds us of just that.  While this music video begins in a church, as if preaching to the choir, there is clapping and whoa oh-oh's which does make this feel like a bit of a spiritual song.  It can have those undertones of the type of song you might hear inside of a church.

The first verse talks about how when you're in school the teacher asks you what you want to be and you say you're just waiting for that bell to ring.   This is shown in the video as well, and in many ways as we get older, as we shift from school to work, we can have a job where we're just waiting for that time when we can clock out and, as the song says, "Go Be Free".

It would feel somewhat ignorant or careless to hear this song now, in the month of June and not think about it in the relation to Juneteenth.  Every day, in every country, whatever your race, gender, religion, etc it just feels like there is always someone out there struggling to be free.  This song really captures that frustration of just wanting to be able to do what everyone else is doing without feeling caged.

From that rambling rock n roll to bits of the blues, there are elements of ZZ Top in here, as this does become quite a rowdy rockin' number.  Whether you think of this as a spiritual song or not- that is to say whether or not you go to church- there is something to be said for the idea of the song that says: "Sometimes you gotta set yourself free".  If not spiritual, it is definitely something worthy of some deep thought and this music is just right on to do that with.
