Music Review // Shalli "Freezing"
As someone who spent the majority of their life in New England, I prefer being warm to being cold. I even spent time living in Houston, Texas and I would trade those 120 degree days with humidity for -30 degree days. I can stand the heat more so than the cold. Which brings up an interesting concept with this song "Freezing" because everyone should know what it means to be cold to someone but the fact that it's used as an insult just goes to show it's something you shouldn't want to be.
Shalli sings about what the title says in this song, as there is the line "Your heart is cold as ice tonight". And it's not like when you don't know someone they seem cold to you. It's when you think you know someone and then they act like a stranger- that's when it's cold. I'm not sure there are a lot of songs that tackle this subject matter (except for that Foreigner song) and so to have this is an updated way seems long overdue.
Somewhere between hip hop and dub is where you'll find this sound. It's interesting because there is singing and not really rapping but it does just seem to fit the whole hip hop vibe more than even being R&B. This music video is also very fitting as it takes place outside in the snow. We're in spring time now, going into summer as it feels warm, but just watching this video has me feeling the cold.
I think a lot about people who live in warm climates and to them 50 degrees is freezing. I think a lot about that time it takes for your car to warm up in the winter and get going, how you feel so cold in those moments and how some people may never know that. But I think we all can agree on what it means- and having felt it when someone is freezing in their emotions and actions. Let Shalli be a guide for you to point that out and remind that other person it is not okay.
