Music Review // The Pukka Orchestra "Every Man and Woman is a Star"
The Pukka Orchestra have created an upbeat song with a positive message. On one hand, I think about this type of stuff a lot, even though it isn't quite the point of the song. The idea that "Every Man and Woman is a Star" is interesting in the modern age of social media because it feels like people are becoming famous more easily than ever before and a lot of them lack a certain skill that would make them famous. It used to be easy to say "Oh, that's an actor", but now we have "celebrities" and I have no idea what they're famous for exactly.
But regardless of the way that the power of who can be famous has shifted over the years, the message in this song remains the same. To some people, maybe Taylor Swift is the most famous person in the world and a star in their eyes. At the same time, to a child, their parent might have that same affect on them that Taylor Swift has on the Swifties. In that sense, someone out there sees us as that star and so we should embrace it.
One concept I could never get behind was the idea of there being supporting characters or NPCs. I believe everyone is the star of their own story and it is up to you to make sure it stays that way. But just because your life happens to intersect with someone else when they are at a restaurant eating doesn't mean they aren't a star. Even the superheroes take time out to work at the newspaper regularly.
A lot of what this song discussing in this upbeat rock/pop manner similar to lovelytheband and Bruce Springsteen is a lot of what people talk about in current day society when it feels like everyone gets an award. IF we're all special, how can any of us be special? It's because we're special in our own different ways. So you need to find what it is that makes you special and hopefully this song can point in that direction towards your story.
