Music Review // Action Forever "In The Dead Of Night"

This is such an interesting song by Action Forever because of both the lyrics and the sound.  Somewhere between pop and futurepop, somewhere between R&B and soul, Action Forever has found a sound with clanky guitars and synths which can feel somewhat like it goes back to the past to new wave while also finding its way into the modern graces of artists such as The Weeknd.   As it comes through in layers, it's just such a grand breakthrough in sound.

When listening to the lyrics I was confused at first because there are the lines: "In the darkness / I feel my heart break into two / until the moment / I hear back from you"  Revolving your whole life around waiting for someone to get back to you and having it affect your mood just seems weird, but I can get how it can make you feel like you're left in the dark if you ask someone a question and are awaiting an answer from them.

As we get further into the song,  there is a line "It's a shame that I'm so far away" which goes on to talk about he just wants to hold you close.  This begins to put the pieces together to form the bigger picture here as it seems like the topic of this song is about being in a long distance relationship.   And when you are, waiting for that other person to respond might take an hour but it might feel like an eternity.

I've heard songs about people being in love with people who lived too far but I don't remember there being a lot of songs about being in an active long distance relationship.  Not being in the same place as someone else and only knowing what they tell you and when they tell you can make it feel like you're in the dark.  If you're in a long term relationship, this song is here for you.
