Music Review // Weatherell "Candy Eyes"

Weatherell has this way of going through an almost shoegaze type of sound that can pull you right back into that era right when grunge was fading away and we were moving into more of what one might call "alternative rock".  Certain artists can be heard within this sound such as Spacehog and I definitely think of it as being closely related to artists such as Supergrass and Superdrag, but there is this one band from that era called Ammonia who I think really would be close to this sound as well.

Through these distorted guitar chords and guitar solos, this song can feel as dreamy as it can wonderful.  It's that idea of staring up at the clouds on a warm summer day, but not quite being so slow and lazy about it because the song does move.  The lyrics bring out lines such as: "To live or die / You can't decide", which feels important, but also in the chorus when the song says the title "Candy Eyes" it follows with "Gonna pay the price".

Listening to this song, "Candy Eyes" feels like it's about that concept of being a kid inside of a candy store- just seeing things that way.  In a sense, when you're a kid, you want all of the candy in a candy store.  But it's not good for you.  And you would even begin to feel that immediate stomach ache if you did try and eat too much candy.  So I feel like it becomes that idea of wanting something that you like and wondering why too much of it is bad for you.

Musically I feel like "Candy Eyes" shines because it has this way of sounding like something which was coming out right after the mainstream was souring on grunge- not exactly Oasis, but something from that time, from that moment in music.  And as much as you can get caught up in this sound, you can also find yourself studying the lyrics and really thinking about not just them in their context but within the context of your own life.
