Music Review // YASSiN & Sean Terrio "DON'T DO THAT"

When this music video begins, there are two people sitting in a movie theater and they make a comment about the movie.  Then they are told "Don't do that!" and they act all offended, as if they did nothing wrong.  Let me just say that if you're in a movie theater, around people you do not know, those strangers do not want to hear your comments.  If you cannot act right, stay home.  But this is a great way to introduce this song because the entire music video takes place not only inside of a movie theater, but with a number of movie parodies.

I could say that this music channels artists of the past such as Go West, but would anyone even get that reference?  I think there is a certain way to describe this sound which pays tribute to the original version of "Life Is a Highway", as that song can be on the verge of sounding country (and artists have covered it in a strictly country way) but it's just kind of that great pop Americana.   "Don't Do That" even has a sweet harmonica solo to solidify this sound.

One of the most difficult things in life is to get older and not be constantly aware of it.   This song does a wonderful job of highlighting that, with lyrics such as "Have the days gotten longer / Or am I running out of time".  This song also takes on that theme, as is shown in the music video, of being a certain age and feeling like you might have accomplished more by now.  The main character in this music video lives as the main character in some blockbuster films before all of the movies being his movies by the end.  Are you the star of your own life?  Does it sometimes not feel like it?

Overall this song doesn't really say "Don't Do That" so much as it says "So don't you look back / If you're not looking to learn".  We can learn from our history, from our mistakes, but I don't think we should ever use it as a guide of where we think we should be in our lives.  I think we are all, mostly, where we are supposed to be.  And as the lyrics say: "I know I'm gonna make it some day", so you just have to keep moving forward and one day, your day will come.
