Music Review // Softklub "God Knows"

When this song first begins, there are these electronics which slowly come in and it feels like there is a ringing like a telephone with them.  As the vocals set in, the tone is set as they can feel rather dark.  It's that darkwave/goth sound within the verses that make me feel like we're listening to a sadder version of Lou Reed.  There is just so much bass in the vocals but also it's the way in which they are delivered in such monotone- without any emotion and perhaps the only feeling being that of despair.

The idea of saying "God Knows" feels like it's something that not only do we not know what it is, but we can't know what it is.   It's the unknown, the unexplained and everything in between.  Lyrics come out such as "It couldn't be any different" and it's just the definitive aspect to it, though we still don't know what it is.  It's like when you die, no one really knows what's going to happen.  But whatever it is that happens, it definitely happens and so that's the certainty within the uncertainty of life.

As the chorus kicks in, the tempo picks up a bit.  The song also quiets down at one point before returning to being loud again.  This song just feels like such a slow punch straight to the gut that it's hard to put into words how it sounds.  It's just so sad, so serious and so direct at the same time.  There is line which says "So would you tell me if I'm lost" and this just has that overall feeling of being for those who do not know where they belong.

Before the end of the song, a saxophone type of solo comes out- like you might hear from a song in the 1980's or early 1990's.  This is followed by some pleasant tones, which if nothing else can perhaps make you feel hopeful.  It is good to have a curious mind, but at the same time, there are things which we just do not know and cannot know, so at some point you just have to let those things be and go on with your life.  I feel like this song is moving on.
