Music Review // Marty Kolls "Waves"
If you've ever felt a deep and personal type of connection with water then this song, "Waves", by Marty Kolls is for you. Even though you could go to the beach and be buried in the sand, I still feel like since so much of the Earth is made of water and so much of our bodies are as well, there is a connection there which just cannot be made by doing other things wtith other elements. The water also feels in a lot of ways that holds mysteries, as we can only dive so deep and know so much- similar to the way that there are things in life we just cannot know.
With synth tones the verses begin. Strings come in like a symphony for the chorus, along with this upbeat feeling of acoustic percussion. Somewhat like Enya or Sinnead O'Connor, there is just a very relaxing and tranquil way about this song. In the same way that you can sit in the water at the beach and have waves crash over you but feel at peace, so can this song feel relaxing yet moving at the same time.
The lyrics offer up such insights as: "Fear is healthy / Fear is good / Even heartbreak makes you grow" which feels both important for life in general and being in the water. If you notice waves are getting too high or you see something in the water like a shark, then that fear sets in to tell you to get to safety. That can happen in your every day life as well. It's just nature. But it is also something which we grow and learn from- maybe don't swim in shark infested waters in the future.
On top of that, the biggest line perhaps of this entire song simply says "It flows". What a mantra to have. Much like how the water keeps moving, even when it seems perfectly still, so does life. Whether it feels calm and relaxed or the waves are crashing down in chaos, life can be like that and you just have to adapt, learn, grow and just become one with the water and not let it overtake you. So much of what can be said for the water though can also be said for life.
