Music Review // Tyra Whitson "Roommates 4 Lyfe"
Seeing the title of song as "Roommates 4 Lyfe" my first thought that comes to mind is thinking back to the 1950's or so when it was even more unacceptable for a same sex couple and so you'd have that one relative and their "roommate" but it was really a romantic relationship. The fact that it's so many years later and people still have an issue with who people want to share their bed with doesn't make sense to me, but this song is a reminder that those people who are prejudice for unjust reasons still exist.
Tyra Whitson says (in the notes of this video) that she often gets asked if her wife and her are sister or roommates when they go out in public and I'm not sure what Alberta is like, but in the United States I could see that happening in a lot of places that are largely uncultured and just not yet fully evolved. I really hope there comes a day when everyone can see two women together and not automatically assume they couldn't possibly be married but the way things are going in the United States right now it feels like we're going backwards in a lot of ways.
This song is a ode to the wife of Tyra Whitson, as lines say things such as: "She's so hot she must be a welder's daughter". What I find funny about the lyrics is that if you think they're unrelatable because it's a woman singing to another woman, well now you understand how it feels when men sing to women (and as a man you could sing this song to a woman should you feel the need to). I don't fully agree with the lyric "I wanna dress up and meet your mother" because I don't like to get dressed up, but I'll still sing along with it.
A rock song overall perhaps with a little bit of country twang found within not just the music itself but also within the way that some of the lyrics come through in their delivery. But I definitely feel like there is a difference between Canadian country music and country music from the USA (Canadian is friendlier sounding) so also know this will be something easier to sing along with and just more pleasant sounding overall. I really enjoy this sound, but I think the message is just as important as well.
