Music Review // Thomas Duxbury and New Mother Nature "Already Dead"
This song begins with a somewhat haunted feeling. It's that dark rock, which hints at punk but is something else entirely. I'm reminded of TSOL and just the overall sounds of garage rock with those haunted vibes. This comes through in the lyrics as well, since this song begins with the line: "Sit alone in the dead of night". There is definitely that vibe of playing this song while dancing around in a cemetery at night.
When we get into the chorus, and hear the title of the song, it says "Light up your last cigarette / Lost silence that the soul emits / Cause I'm already dead". It's not really something easy to explain, what is happening in these lyrics and why we are in the valley of the other sun. It can feel almost sci-fi in that sense, as if we're on a different planet. But, at times, life can also just feel like we're on a different planet.
There are a lot of reasons for one to feel like they are already dead. Sometimes life can feel like we've died and gone to Hell. But when you have those experiences, where you feel like maybe you're shutting down and just nothing affects you any more, they can be for many different reasons. In that way, I feel like this song is open to be how you got to the point where you also might feel as if you are already dead.
Before the end of the song there is this groovy guitar solo and then it ends with this solid guitar note as well, almost like a whistle. This music video is also shot in a way which makes it feel more like it's telling a story from the days when music videos were all over television. So not only would I put this song in a playlist, I'd put this music video into rotation on a screen at a party as well because both are just that good.
