Music Review // The Mosfets "Radio, Turn Me On"
We need more music videos in the world with skateboarding clips in them. I feel like with MTV no longer being what it once was, there are far too many kids growing up just not feeling that same connection between music and skateboarding that I feel. The Mosfets have found a way to keep that tradition alive, with this music video, and I think people need to go out of their way to watch and realize just how important it is for these two art forms to go together.
All that being said, "Radio, Turn Me On" is a fun, free-spirited song that fits in well within the genre of punk rock without perhaps not being only punk. On the surface, there are some influences of The Beatles in here and bands that came after them but were clearly shaped by them like The Hives. At the same time, I hear Jim Carroll in here and that's never a bad thing. Plus this song goes into lyrcs that say "Everybody wants my baby" which feels like a nod to The Doors.
The Mosfets really leave a lot open here for you to take as you see fit. The chorus says "Everybody's got to love someone / Everybody's gonna have a bit of fun" and in that sense it just feels like we're out there living our best lives. But the verses have more of a sense that we're not, with lines like "She said 'he ain't man'" / Well baby that's just cruel". If this song was written in the 1960's or 1970's I definitely feel like we could make a case for the lyrics being about free love, but we still might be able to now.
At the end of the day, however you take these lyrics can be up to you, but this still is very much a fun song to listen to as it is punk in ways which we don't often hear. I also feel like not enough kids these days know of Jim Carroll, so if this helps them find him it's also a plus. This just feels like, with the skateboarding video as well, it's just the song that keeps on giving and the more you listen to it, the more you will get out of it.
