Music Review // Alex Southey "Green Sunday"
With soft acoustics, this song begins and has a feeling of Elliott Smith throughout it. There is a more upbeat way about the lyrics and just general tone, as it feels like a song of hope rather than one of sadness. Though the line about the title says: "Cause it's always Green Sunday / Sadder than Blue Monday". Is it worse to go back to work on Monday or to have that feeling on Sunday that you know you're going back to work tomorrow? Sometimes it's really that anticipation that gets you.
While I always relate "green" with being eco-friendly, there is also a line within this song which says "Just lemme know / What you need, and maybe later what to clean". Though it is not my schedule any more, I used to have Sunday as my designated cleaning day as I'd be out Saturday doing things and working the weekdays. I feel like a lot of people might keep this schedule, but these days I just kind of clean whenever I have the time and whenever it feels like it needs it.
One of the things which I see in this video that makes me feel like it's about cleaning is just how things are kind of left on the streets, like sneakers. I do find it odd that I often times see things- even both sneakers- just somewhere they shouldn't be, but then it's also about people who get rid of things that they don't need but maybe others do. Getting rid of things like that goes with the idea of cleaning on Sundays, but also we as a society need to think about how much we actually waste in a given year and try not to do that so much.
The second half of this song really kicks in. As the pace picks up, by the end you'll hear the lines repeated "I'm thinkin' / Thinkin' what you are" almost like a mantra. In many ways, cleaning can feel spiritual because cleaning all that dirt off of your floor, for example, can also make you feel like cleaning all that dirt out of your life. If I had a cleaning playlist, I would definitely put this song on it, but it also just works for when you need to clean your mind.
