Music Review // Erin Propp "Alert to Glory"

Erin Propp begins this song with pianos which slowly come into percussion.   You can just feel it building and then it does kick in a bit but not too heavy.  "Alert to Glory" has such an interesting sound because it sounds like this specific time in the 1990's that no one really wants to talk about any more.  Everyone thinks of the 1990's (in terms of rock) as being big hair or going into grunge and then after 1995 or so some of those alternative rock bands which came after grunge started to fade.

When I hear this song I right away think about the theme song to the show "Dawson's Creek", which is by the lovely Paula Cole.   Paula Cole was also somehow known for a radio single but still doesn't get discussed enough in modern times.   And so I feel like there is this genre of rock, on the lighter side, which was out there in the mid to late 1990's that people may have heard and forgotten.   This song by Erin Propp might bring back memories of Lilith Fair for you, if you are of a certain age.

But then if you don't think of it as compared to music of the past, if you weren't alive during that time so can't really use it as an example, I think the biggest thing you might feel like is how it has these elements of certain pop on the radio today (like Sabrina Carpenter) but there are added elements which you can't quite put your finger on.  The way this can just feel new and exciting to someone who is twenty years old makes this song feel even more important.

Certain elements of this song make me think of church music as well.  With the title "Alert to Glory", I will let you listen to the lyrics and form your own opinion, but just the way this bulds and lifts up, it feels like it could be in that genre of rock that tends to sing about such things.  Whether or not you have to attend church every Sunday to enjoy this song though is up to you, as I tend to find all music to be spiritual, it's just that Erin Propp seems to have a found a way to turn what might not be a strictly for church song into a hymn.
