Music Review // Sk8tie "Cost Me Alot"
If I heard the song "Cost Me Alot" on the radio, I would go out of my way to find out who the artist was behind it. This very much has that feeling of modern popular hip hop, which ranges from artists such as Kendrick Lamar to J Cole. This song by Sk8tie would fit right in so well that it wouldn't miss a beat, yet also make people unaware look to see who was making this type of sound that is quite frankly better than what is currently on the radio.
Sk8tie has a lot of fun with the lyrics on "Cost Me Alot" as the idea of something costing something can refer to money, but it can also refer to other things. You can lose a piece of yourself in what you're doing or even just lose friendships, relationships, etc. It's one of those things where you can say "I did this and it cost me $500" or at the same time say "I did this and it cost me my job". Sk8tie explores the differences between what money brings and what other things can take.
As we are gearing into summer, this song has the lyric "Every day feel like summer" which is a nice way to get into a summer anthem. One of my favorite lines in this song which repeats says "Time is all you got" and I think people tend to forget that. If you think in terms of things like money, you can lose money but get more- or at least survive without it- but time is that one thing which when it is gone, you cannot replace it.
Going between singing and rapping so rapidly that I cannot quite catch all the words on the first listen, Sk8tie just seems to shine on this song. Hopefully you will listen to and understand these lyrics, realizing what certain things cost and how it's not always about money. At the same time, there are some pounding beats in the chorus that will sound good coming out of your car, so you can have that music you like with some deep thoughts.
