Music Review // Heliara "Confessions to My Daughter"
If you've ever had a child, you can appreciate this song "Confessions to My Daughter" by Heliara. While it starts sort of slow and disjointed, the rock comes together to remind me of something from the 1995-2000 era of music. I hear bands like Luscious Jackson in here, as it just has that energy and would be likely played alongside them on the radio at that particular time. But keeping that sound alive now is great and this song has an even better message.
Something which people without children simply cannot understand that parents know is that when you have a child, everything else becomes secondary- even yourself. Having a child should mean wanting better for them than what you had and just seeing all of that hope and potential. Though, at the same time, if you think about your parents viewing you that way, it can become rather depressing, so it's best not to think about it too much or too far back.
What a special thing this is though to have a song for your child as a parent. During the chorus at first it feels like the child is singing back up vocals, so also hearing the child's voice at that stage of life is a good reminder for them when they're out graduating high school years later (and it says years but it goes by in the blink of an eye). So while this song might feel personal between Heliara and her daughter, it feels like any parent can relate with it in a broader level.
As a parent, the lyrics in here which feel like a mantra are important as they say: "You mean everything / I want everything for you". I feel like you never really know what it's like to love someone until you have a child because everyone else can do something to wrong you and you'll cut them out of your life, but you could never imagine doing that to someone you created and raised. So this song somehow does capture that in such a loving way, any parent should be so lucky to hear this.
