Music Review // 2ŁØT "Iris"
"Iris' might be the most musically complex song that 2LOT has released in recent memory and if you've been paying attention that is really saying a lot. As the song begins with beats it has that way about it which makes you want to dance. The rhythm carries through with this winding guitar riff, which feels like it's feeding off of the beats. Words can't really do it justie but the way that you'll hear the bass and then the guitar will definitely draw you in.
More than anything else, "Iris" is a love song. It is an ode to someone named Iris who, as the line in the chorus explains: "You know how beautiful you are". And it's not just that line, but lyrics such as: "You make me feel complete" which show how this song is a tribute to someone who the singer finds to be beautiful but the subject also knows it and is confident about it. Not only is it okay to confident about these things, but it's also okay for people to write these types of songs as we don't really hear them as much these days.
Towards the end of this song, it drifts off and goes into this rap which switches the vibe from dance to hip hop but you can hear how closely related the two are. Within these rap lyrics there is a lyric I like which says: "Everybody's working but she's working harder" and I think that's just so important because you have to go those extra steps. Through this distinct bass line comes horns near the end, which make me think of Us3, and the way which this just goes from electronic dance to something like De La Soul so flawlessly needs to be studied.
Many artists in this realm of electronic music can just generate a beat which you can dance to then put a hook over it with the same few words repeated over and over again. That is by no means easy, but the way that 2LOT can not only do this but then also cross genres all literally within the span of the same song just shows how talented and special they are. This is the type of sound that will not only spawn new genres but it will revolutionize music on the whole.
