Music Review // Tyler Brooker "You Hypocrite"
As someone who grew up in the 1990's era of grunge and then later alternative rock, I'd always enjoy listening to the radio (the original playlist) and amidst the rock songs like Soundgarden and Everclear out would come this electronic number that somehow seemed to fit in while standing out at the same time. Artists like Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk have paved the way for electronic musicans to be heard outside of their scene, at least for those who can remember such things on the radio.
Tyler Brooker has this intense track called "You Hypocrite" that really puts the emphasis on the chorus and rightfully so. When you hear those songs on the radio that could be electronic out of their element, you don't always think about the lyrics and sometimes all I remember about them lyrically is the idea of there being "block rocking beats". But Tyler Brooker has managed to tell a story in this song about a hypocrite who he says: "You're gonna fall into your own pit"
When "You Hypocrite" kicks into the chorus it feels like the extra bass comes into the beats so as to dance more than to pay attention to the lyrics because there really aren't a lot of words. But I do enjoy how the verse seems to dial it back a little bit so you can hear lines like: "You build your hope of mischief and lies / Don't you know / I'm aware of that". This puts the song into more of a perspective and gives you another way to relate with it, rather than just being able to dance.
In this modern age of music I like that "You Hypocrite" shows that Tyler Brooker could just as easily be a part of some big EDM festival and could just as easily go out and open up a tour for someone such as, say, Twenty One Pilots. There is just that much mass appeal on the surface, if you just want to listen to the music and forget about your troubles, but there is also a lot of depth if you want to look closer and I find that the more you listen to a certain song, the closer you're going to end up looking whether you plan to or not.
