Music Review // TYA "OK"
"OK" is an energy infused rock song by TYA that can feel a bit punk at times. It has the sound of someone such as P!nk or Avril Lavigne and within the lyrics it also just feels like it can be an anthem for a generation of people who are not okay. The song begins with a very elaborate and detailed look at not being all right and then goes into just a lot of OKs.
The song opens with a story about a car crash which ends with "Took the car in, good as new! Now I just need to fix me too". This goes into another verse which starts with "So I budget for therapy", which is something I feel like just not enough people do or can do. This goes into the lyrics: "He says that I'm in peak health / Why do I wanna kill myself". The idea that having to be in poor health or just being sad makes your mental health bad is that type of stereotype this helps to break.
TYA continues with "So it's back to therapy", which is good, and then the hook of "It's OK not to be OK but I'd rather be" and then it loops. In some ways I think perhaps we have normalized that idea of ~it's okay to not be okay~ to the point where people are just running around and they're not okay. While it is okay to not be okay, we also have to start normalizing asking for help, going to therapy and whatever else needs to be done to make ourselves okay again.
What I like most about this song "OK" is that it has all the power and force to grab you and really make you listen to it, but at the same time your head might just be ringing with those two little letters- "OK"- by the time you're done listening. This is perfect because it is enforcing that idea that you should be okay and also can give you steps on how to potentially go about just that.
