Music Review // Bad Self Portraits "I Think I'm Going to Hell"

Listening to the song "I Think I'm Going to Hell" just reassures me of what a great album that same title is going to bring out soon by Bad Self Portraits.  This song comes in with all of the fury of grunge, the melody of alternative and just that overall clean feeling of modern rock.  It's somewhere between Audio Jane and Cinema Stare and I absolutely love that about it.  With starts and stops in the chorus, this can feel dreamy and especially before the end there is this music heavy part where you can just space out before the lyrics kick back in.

Perhaps the lyrical content is what might be discussed most regarding this song, but I kind of feel like that does a disservice to the music.   Still, the song asks two important questions and they might be touchy (no pun intended) subjects because they are about religion.   The first question asks "Did Jesus ever touch himself?" and I will say that since Jesus did take the form of man that, yes, he likely did.  The second question asks "Did Jesus watch me touch myself?" and this is one of those sort taboo topics.

So anyone who has been raised even slightly religious knows that Jesus and God are up there in Heaven just watching us at all times.  But this always lead to those questions, such as this song asks, and just things like is God watching me when I'm in the bathroom.  However, when you're a kid in Sunday School they won't answer those questions for you and we just kind of grow up not knowing because then we feel like as adults we're not allowed to ask them because it isn't appropriate.

I don't think this song will bother people because it has references to touching yourself (such songs exist) but because it includes religion it might.  For me though, this song poises important questions and even if you don't really want the answers it is still a reminder that there are questions which exist out there that we are not supposed to ask but we should maybe still be asking anyway.   This is just such a great rock song by Bad Self Portraits but it also opens you up to a world of curious possibilities.
