Music Review // Trevor Kidd "Sunshine"
"Sunshine" begins with these raw acoustics that make you feel like you're getting a glimpse into the soul of Trevor Kidd. As he sings, the words pour out as if you really are. This is a love song at heart, so it has this pleasant feel to the music, but it is a type of rock which I cannot compare with other sounds. The sound does kick in and become electric, even with a nice guitar part to be heard, but it still just feels like this mix between Santana and something like The Wallflowers to where I can't quite put an exact comparison on it.
Trevor Kidd faces reality in this song with lyrics such as "The times they ain't been easy / I know we ain't where we want to be". As this is a love song, it's nice to see someone admitting they love someone but are still struggling. I think a lot of what is missed in modern music (and life in general) is that when you're in a relationship such as this song is about, the times they aren't always good but your relationship can still stay strong.
As this song really does tell the story of the love between two people, it does so in a way with that focus on enduring. This can be heard in lyrics like: "With all that we've been through / You know this love is true". Many times we don't hear about the hardships of being together because when times get tough people can run. But to have that idea of going through it but still sticking together is something powerful and something music needs more of, as well as life in general.
Perhaps one of the biggest tells in this song is in the line in the chorus in which Trevor Kidd says: "I feel you like sunshine down by the river". There are a lot of places where you can feel sunshine, so you have to wonder why it is down by the river. I think it's because the river can be a lot like life- at times it can be quiet and peaceful, while at other times it can be faster and louder. But no matter how the river may act, to still feel that sunshine, to still feel that love is for that relationship to persevere.
