Music Review // hoxie rae "Best of Luck"
When "Best of Luck" first starts I hear these piano keys come in that feel like they're going to take me into a song from the "Birds of Prey" soundtrack, which is one of my favorite soundtracks. There is just something about this where Hoxie Rae combines this R&B/soul sound with one of rock. As the song goes on, you'll hear those distorted guitars come through which will begin to make you think perhaps this is closer to the blues, but still the way it can sound like both Maisie Peters and Halsey at the same time is amazing.
Lyrically this feels like a song about revenge. In the chorus there is actually the line: "If you cross me again it will be your end", which sums a lot of it up. "Best of Luck" begins with the lyrics: "You killed me / But I rose up from my own grave". This just sets the tone for the idea that this person who is singing the song was wronged by another person, but they be wronged by that same person again because if that person were to try something similar they'd meet their end instead.
As much as the musical vibes of this song feel like they could be a part of the "Birds of Prey" soundtrack, so does the overall vibes of the song including the lyrics. That movie is about the rebirth of Harley Quinn after being wronged by The Joker and this just has that same sort of feeling only maybe without the burning of property and actual attempts at death. It's just fun how sometimes songs can remind me of soundtracks in their sound but this one does in its intentions as well.
Regardless of how much you might know about comic books, the fact remains that this song is about overcoming. There is a line that says: "Try to push me down / I'll get right back up" and I feel like that really sums this up as well. As humans, we are allowed to make mistakes and sometimes that means letting people in that we shouldn't. One of the biggest ideas of "Best of Luck" is not that we make that initial mistake of trusting someone, but rather this song is letting them know that we won't be doing that again. I feel that's a theme we can all relate with.
