Music Review // Heather Avalon "Use Me"

When "Use Me" first begins, Heather Avalon has this sound of a driving country guitar.  This quickly changes as the song continues, as it can kick into this rocking chorus.  There are sounds where it feels like the music is just bouncing around, which makes it somewhat catchy, and at times it can even sultry.  As the music stops and the vocals continue, I hear those vibes like someone singing in a James Bond film.  This song just feels like two or three genres combined to create a new genre and it works.

Lyrically this song is something I think everyone has felt at one point or another.   With lines like: "I think a little too much about the people I loved who don't love me any more" it shows how the singer felt vulnerable, and I think at some point in our lives we've all kind of opened ourselves up to others only for it to come back and hurt us in the end.  "Use Me" feels like it's about that idea of letting someone in only for them to mistreat you.

To that end, it may feel as if the person who did this to you is your enemy and so you want revenge, but the fun part about this song is that it takes more of a self-reflection than anything else.  Heather Avalon sings about looking in the mirror, realizing it's her all along, and then just singing: "Go ahead and use me".  It might not be the best response, but in the moment and when you're frustrated, sometimes it feels like the only one.

This song feels like if someone lived in a big city and was constantly mugged every day when they walked to work, just constantly losing their money in that way.  Rather than going and getting a gun or fighting back in another way, you just get so fed up that you go outside and start throwing your money in the air like "You want it so badly? Come and get it!"  Only with this song the money is your feelings and if you can feel that then you are not alone.
