Cassette Review // Sansyou "Spaces In Between"
As this cassette opens with the titular track it has a rather upbeat way about it. Somewhere between dreampop and Chris Isaak, this will have you feeling like you're listening to a new version of that 1950's Buddy Holly era rock n roll sound with a bit of Coheed and Cambria mixed in for good measure. The guitars really blister through, which just makes it feel like they're really driving the charge of the songs.
While the second song, "My Moving Parts", is instrumental, "Due South Pacific" is a slower burn with these vocals which make me think of Wheatus. This is just such a chill song though, like if Weezer's "Island In The Sun" wasn't so obnoxious. Birds are chirping and I feel like I can still hear some distant music before this first side comes to an official end.
Strong guitars cut through in that shoegaze / FNL / post rock type of way to start of the flip side with a bang. There is definitely some strong Deep Elm vibes within here. A strong bass line takes us into the next song, which makes me think about Chris Isaak again, being on the beach for that "Wicked Game" song. The vocals almost have a whispering way about them as well, which plays into Circa Survive / Portugal The Man as well.
This final song has big instrumental parts and I feel like the majority of this cassette can have these strong bass, percussion and vocal parts but overall they just tend to be lead by the guitar. Within these songs, you'll feel as if the guitar is the leader, guiding the other sounds and at times when there are no vocals it is strong enough to act as those would. This is overall just a very pleasant and relaxing cassette that you can put on and zone out or use the energy to hyperfocus just as easily.
