Music Review // The Dream Eaters "CRUCIFIXXX"
The Dream Eaters have returned with a new song and you can read into it what you will, but I have my own ideas about it as well. The sound of "CRUCIFIXXX" is somewhere between that Cyndi Lauper and "Running Up That Hill" pop that was big in the 1980's and 1990's. This is interesting because it can really draw people in without them thinking too much about the song. On the surface, this is just a fun pop song that you can sing along with and not really think too much about.
If you're like me and really want to read into this song though, the only obvious choice is that this song is about a vampire. Though it does not say that anywhere that I can tell, I still feel like the lyrics point to it and the idea is that a crucifix can stop a vampire as well. There are also lines like "It's 4PM / I'm half in the bag / My lips stained red, I need to kiss you" and I always imagine the vampire going in for that kiss before biting the victim and drinking their blood.
Though it might be out there, if you relate with this song lyrically you might be a vampire. There are lines such as "Hangin out alone" in the chorus which people can likely relate to in a general sense, but vampires are often alone. As a vampire, you will outlive so many of your peers that it will begin to feel like you are alone eventually and while it is easy enough to feel like that in modern society I just like my vampire theory.
Regardless of how you take these lyrics, they are there to be taken. "CRUCIFIXXX" is also just the type of song that can get stuck in your head but you won't mind. You can listen to this song hundreds of times without even thinking about what the lyrics might mean or my vampire theory. And that's the beauty in it all- it can be both very light on the surface but much deeper if you want to dive in as well.
