Music Review // Jean Caffeine "Mammogram"
Before I get into this review I must remind everyone that I am not a doctor so nothing I say should be taken as legal advice or medical facts. This song, "Mammogram", by Jean Caffeine is exactly what the title says it is about. As a man I don't know a lot about mammograms but I do know that this is that type of medical thing it seems like all women do and most of them don't seem to enjoy it so a song discussing it feels long overdue.
With these sweet guitar riffs and a sound that just feels like it's walking us through the story, "Mammogram" tells us about what it's like from the perspective of a woman. There is a line in here that says: "If men had to do this they'd go insane". I often think about how much more it feels like women go to the doctor than men for routine things. I'm not saying in a sense like I, for instance, only really visit the doctor when I need to, but I mean in the sense that men don't have OBGYNs.
At times this sound can be feel a little bit trippy, while it can also just use the lyrics to tell the story as almost a scary movie. This music video is set in this blue tone and features mostly just the musicians playing their instruments, but it could just as easily be this mini-horror movie about the experience. One of the reasons why I'm sure Jean Caffeine didn't play it out as such visually is because of the rules on YouTube and once again let's talk about how men can be shirtless in public but women cannot.
Aside from getting into some big debate about how flawed the human body is and how much more work it feels like women have to put into theirs than men do, this song really is just this great way to bring awareness to something which people should be doing and quite frankly saves lives. As the song says "Yes, m'am, it's your mammogram" and so maybe this song will help you through something you otherwise might not want to do but is going to be worth it in the long run.
